Showreel and applying for internship

So I am currently looking for internship and because of that I made an updated reel that you can see here

Jeff Hansen Showreel 2013. from Jeff Hansen on Vimeo.

I am a bit sad that a few things didn't get finished in time for it, but I can't keep waiting for it as I need that internship before my next semester starts in mid january.
I am very excited to see where I end up, there is a lot of cool places that I would love to work :).

Undone Models

Hey guys!

So we started working on our graduation game for dadiu.
Our temporary title is Undone, as it is about a guy who has to redo some of his former choices so he can die in peace.

Cool enough concept, buuut the not really my kind of thing to be honest :).
We do have some really cool mechanics though, and I think that the game will be fun!

But I really just wanted to show off the 2 models I have done this week :)

First one is the main character, Eric :)

And the second one is his wife which will be yelling at him in the beginning, While eric is done and is being rigged, I still need to do retopology on the woman. and afterwards, I am gonna cut her up in parts and use some of those for level parts, (muhahaha).

Interstellar Marines Needs your help!

Hey everyone!
I want to promote a game I really believe deserves a lot of attention, especially now!

Interstellar Marines By zeropoint software Is a immersive sci-fi FPS game and it has been in development for a long time, though they have been through some financial problems lately they have made a very ambitious goal to gather 600.000$ get back their core team, and finally be able to ship their game and show what they are made of!

I will admit I am slightly biased by the fact that I know these guys, but that also means I know that they have been fighting for this with blood, sweat and tears and are not willing to accept faillure as an option!

They have made one hell of a kickstarter campaign, and I would be happy to support with all I got, Unfortunately I am a poor student so I am asking for your help!
Help by sharing, pledging and whatever you can think of to help out!

Go to their Kickstarter campaign and help them out!

Also A cool little Thing, You can try out their small game demos on their Official site

For the love of the game!

Necromancer: Idun

Hey everyone.
Wanted to show some progress on one of my newest projects.
It is a female character named Idun, she is named that way after the girl from norse mythology who carries apples of youth for the ases ( dominant "specie" of gods :)).
the trick about this girl, is that she is a necromancer! she keeps stuff alive in different ways you gotta say.

This is part of the creature creation for production program that runs at phoenix atelier with cesar dacol jr. as teacher.
And I gotta say, that guy is a truly amazing teacher, if you get the chance to get him to tutor you, I would say go for it, it is a great experience.

First off I went through different design Ideas. But I ended up with this quite skinny yet powerful woman.

First off I get my orthographics done, this really helps a lot especially after the newer versions of zbrush has implemented an easy way to use imageplanes when you sculpt.

Next comes Zspheres, this is really simple to be honest. just a basic skeleton and from there I pull out the silhoutte of my character using mainly move, inflat and smooth. This is an easy task when you have your imageplanes to back you up! :)

Lastly I just started some sculpting. Consulting my teacher he felt I should get my foundation down before starting to place the female parts of the chest area.
Still keeping the subdivision very low, only at the 3rd one at this point.
we will see where this takes me from now on. It is kind of a different approach, but It is work nicely for me I feel.

Sculpting with a mouse!

So today I was sitting in class next to a guy who is sculpting for a project he is on working on himself.
And I just wanted to sculpt so bad! watching him as he go, But I had no wacom tablet.
So I just for fun, started up zbrush.
And all I did really was to play around with the dynamesh sphere. but at some point I was like, fuck it! Even though I promised myself to never use a mouse for zbrush I went for it!.
It was very different, and quite difficult aswell, But after a bit more than an hour I think I got a satisfying result :).
I actually feel quite surprised that I could make something that actually looked quite cool with just a mouse.
But you can see it here and judge it yourself :)

Motion capture character.

So at school we recently started a little project to learn motion capture, which is awesome!
And I gotta say, I was in that suit watching myself live on a screen, being troll that I made myself.
That feeling was great! and we had so much fun doing it, only bad part about being the guy in the suit gotta be the heat, cause those suit are so tight and no air goes through, so even doing a walk cycle you are gonna sweat like you are doing  you workouts at the gym! :)

We have to take this motion capture information and clean it up and use it in a game with certain criteria.
We will deliver the finished game Wednesday so deadline is closing in on us here!
Our game is gonna be about a troll waking up from his hibernation, and quickly realising his cave is falling apart, and he gotta get out quick!

as of now I am just sitting betweem motion builder and maya and cleaning the motion capture data and making it ready for the game. I gotta say motion capture is not too ideal for cycles without a treadmill, but we do this for exercise so I guess it is okay!

Not too long ago I did our main character and I will show it to you here!
When the game is done I am gonna post some pictures of how it looks ingame, and you might be lucky enough to see a picture of me suited up in a mocap suit! ;)

Here is the troll

The troll was meant as a mockup or quick concept for a mocap project I am working on at school right now :)
rest just practicing!

character concept

So I took the last speedsculpt a little further!
I think it turned out pretty good considering the rush I have been on since I am on my way out the door.
But gotta love photoshop for making it so easy to do this!
let me know what you think.

Retopo and texture change

So the guy I did a little while back, is now retopoed, and textured.
pretty satisfied with it, even though I feel the texture is maybe lacking a bit.
And maybe my next thing is gonna be something more detailed.

Update

Really starting to get excited about a lot of stuff lately, and I feel like sharing it for those who care :).

We are starting to get to the end of the production on the cinematic trailer we are doing for the game forced by BetaDwarf.
And in my humble opinion, it looks pretty damned sweet for a production done by 6 students working after hours.
Definately look forward to see this guys.
And if you are into indie games (they are a ton of fun usually) be sure to check out their website to learn more about it.
http://betadwarf.com/

Also I will be enrolling on the cgtalk course called Rapid Character Development for Online Games, where I will be taught by John Deriggi, and I am super excited!
You can check him out here http://www.johnderiggi.com if you want.

I hope (and expect) this course to benefit me a lot as I am starting on my next semester of school in just 1 week.
The course focuses on getting a character modeled and textured for the game engine unity, which luckily is the same engine we are gonna use to make 2 games on my next semester of school.
Always nice to be prepared so you can push your part of the pipeline even further!
I am still not sure quite how things are gonna work out, and what kind of games we are gonna do, but no matter what, I think it is gonna be a blast!

I also just managed to stretch my economy just enough to be able to enroll on the creature design course taught by Cesar Dacol Jr. which is an absolutely awesome teacher, and I was lucky enough that the course by John D. ends just before Cesars.
Here we should learn to "demystify" the whole design process so to speak, and go through all the aspects of it, something my former teacher Bryan Wynia pointed out to me I could use well.
If you yourself are interested in looking into the courses cesar just opened a new online school called phoenix atelier (http://www.phoenixatelier.com/) where you can enroll.

Plus I got a "small" job that can give me my first real experience in the industry, still not gonna talk a lot about it, as I am not all certain about all the details, but Just so you can see that: I got A LOT of stuff going on.

So that was all for now, hope you enjoyed the little peak into what I have going on.

Stay on top!

Jeff

speedsculpt #010

But here it is, another quickie. quite fun, blobby kind of guy .

And as usual I made a video of my process

speedsculpt #009

Newest one from today done.
This time I tried using the clay tubes mostly for a change, I like how it makes a lot of happy accidents.
Though I gotta admit, I do like the clay buildup a bit more, it seems to give me better results.
But here goes.

Hope you enjoy.
I am not all to happy about how the top of his head ended up looking looking like. It just seems a bit off to me.

Speedsculpt #008

So today My girlfriend challenged me to do a cute speedsculpt for once.
And I was like, Bring it girl!
So actually, this was harder than I first thought. And 2 times I started completely over with a new concept because it either didn't work or was creepy-ish. :O
But I ended up with a fairly satisfying result, so I guess it was good to get out of my comfort zone and try something new :).

You can see it here with a fast color layout:
 and without obviously

Speedsculpt #007

I made two slightly different versions, could quite decide what I liked the most.
this one was quite fun, though those leaves just wouldn't look right, I better look into how to the very thin stuff sometime.
besides that, very fun sculpt to do actually :).

I made a video for this aswell you can watch it here:

speedsculpt #006

This guy was done very quick, around 40min. or so I think.
I tried to keep it quick and rough.
And in the end I only had 120k polygons, So mission accomplishe.
Also another reason for keeping it quick is that I got another project we need to finish up so I will start on that now and get a lot done hopefully :) ..

If you want to watch this guy get done I made a timelapse you can watch.
And this time zbrush didn't bug out on me :)

Little Demon

I did this little guy today, He took about 2-2½ hours to do . So still, pretty quick, even though he ain't really that detailed :).
Again I made a timelapse video showing me going at it.
Unfortunately, something weird seems to happen to zbrush in the end, where my model just stays in place while my cursor keeps going on all over the place, Never tried it before. But I got a good idea of what went wrong.
But anyway, I just replaced the lost footage with a few turns of the finished model.
This guy is made from a concept I saw on creaturebox, recently rediscovered their site, and they still do the same just ridiculously great and fun monster and creature drawings.
You should check it out if you run out of inspiration someday!

The color is done quick, and is just to have something there to show this model really.
I still think it looks okay though :)..

You can see the video from Vimeo here:

I do recommend you press on the vimeo sign though so you can see it in HD :)

Cheers

Speedsculpt #005

Did this little dude today, and for the first time, I recorded myself sculpting.
It was a quite fun experience after watching thousand of videos with others sculpting, to now see how it looks when I go at it :).

New showreel

Hey everyone.
Today was the day my class had to hand in our Showreel for this semester.
Gotta be honest, I have been looking forward to this day, it has been a long and tiresome semester.
But I am really looking forward to the next one.
Next semester we will be working with students from several different schools on DADIU (Danish academy for digital interactive entertainment) and put together 2 games, first one in two weeks as sort of a test game, to try out how the teams work together and feel what is possible.
And the second we will have 6 weeks to complete,  that's quite some time and think we can get far with that, so really looking forward.

But on to my 3rd Showreel as a Student at Truemax

I think you have to go to Vimeo to watch it in HD if you want it :)

Cheers

fun little guy!

I just made this little guy!
at the time I am setting him up so he will fit in my showreel I'm gonna finish soon :)

Thursday, April 26, 2012

quickie ;)

Just messing around zbrush for half an hour or so.
I'm really trying to get a new working philosophy.
Where I just try and spend alot of time on basics, and so to speak do my work for the trash can, to really try and get the juices flowing instead of always having that fear of not performing in the back of the head.
I hope this will get me even more exited about this than I have ever been before but let's see where it takes me.
But for now, you guys will be the trash can most of the time :) .

Sea man Maquette

I have been attending a cg workshop in concepting and maquetting in zbrush.
I had bryan wyrnia as teacher. He has a really nice way of looking at things, very traditional.

Having only little former experience with zbrush, I thought this was a good way of getting into things really fast.
And sure enough, pretty fast I got comfortable with his method, and I am definitely doing more of this stuff!

Our goal was to create our version of the creature described in lovecrafts story of the shadow over innsmouth.
He forced us to only use real life reference and no inspirational pictures (drawn ones / already interpret ones).
This was actually a really nice way of starting the creative part of creating this sea creature, where you could just look at all these fish and toads and try and kind of mix them together and really make your piece believable.

You can see my result here, where it it composited and all done.

I did alot of colour tweaking aswell as adding stuff like saliva in photoshop.

Hope you enjoy the piece!

Sketch #001

Might aswell bring some system to it, so I can just draw and not necesarily find a name for everything i do.
